خطايا شارع عشرين

هل لاحظت تلك اللوحة المغروزة في كتف الشارع عندما اخترتَ بيتك؟ البناية التي تضمّ شقتك؟ الأرضَ التي ستبني عليها حلماً تسكنهُ أنتَ وأفراد عائلتك لاحقاً؟ هل منحتها شرف نظرةٍ خاطفةٍ تقرأ فيها على عجل عنوانكَ الجديد؟ أظنّكَ فعلتَ ذلك حقاً، لا عندما وقّعت على عقد منزلك، منزلك الذي لا تدري أأنت ساكنه الأول أم الأخير! أو أنّ ما يتدثّر بالأرض التي تطؤها قدماك – وستفعل كلّ يوم اعتباراً من هذه اللحظة – رفات عاشقٍ أم شظايا قنبلة أم صندوق أرملة أم درع محارب لم يعد يذكره أحد – بل فعلتَ عند تسلمك أول فاتورة كهرباء لتتأكد من موقعك على خريطة أعبائك المنزلية، ولتنتبهَ أخيراً إلى أنك بتّ رقماً آخر في هذا الحي، وبيتك - الذي أسعده أن يمارس دوره باحتمال وطمأنينة - عادَ دالّةً يُعرفُ بها الشارع كما يفترضُ به أن يكون.

وبكل الأحوال، من واجبي أن أبادرَك أيها الجار الذي زادنا رقماً على رقم بالترحاب: أهلاً بكَ في شارع 20.

That unassuming sign, planted roadside, did you truly see it? Not when you chose this place, your apartment's building, the very earth where your dream home would rise. A fleeting glance, perhaps, just enough to catch your new address, a mere label. I suspect it wasn't until the contract was signed, that moment of commitment to a dwelling whose past, whose future, remained a mystery. Did you ponder then what lay beneath your feet? The echoes of a forgotten lover, the shattered remnants of violence, a widow's hidden grief, a warrior's lost shield?

No, I imagine the sign truly registered when the first electricity bill arrived, a stark confirmation of your place within the neighborhood's grid. You became a number, another resident, a point on the map of household burdens. Your home, initially a haven of promise, reverted to its function as a street marker, a simple identifier.

Regardless, neighbor, it is my duty to extend a welcome. You, who have added your number to our own. Welcome to 20th Street.
